Learning that lasts a lifetime

Interviewing Children for professional purposes while maintaining a sensitive and respectful approach to the child can be challenging.

In a recent report by Dr Richard Whitecross, Lecturer in Law at Napier University, he concludes:

“There appears to be a general consensus that further training, notably in respect of interviewing children and child development, is required."

This course has been developed to address that gap in training within the professional legal services. The course was designed with the support of Children and Families department in Edinburgh City Council, Alasdair Dowcra, the leading authority in Child Law in Scotland and Dr Richard Whitecross.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Raise your understanding of the context - children and separation and children under stress.
  • To be confident in your interactions with children at different ages and stages including play led interactions for younger children.
  • Learn the tools of the trade:  what you should know about questions.
  • Learn how to develop a sophisticated set of techniques to bring about the best possible outcome professionally without unnecessary distress to the child or adolescent.

The course will be skills based and taught experientially with plenty of opportunity for delegates to input real life experiences and to reflect on their learning.

“What is needed in this world is an intelligence which does not destroy innocence”.
